The former interim director of education of York Region's Catholic school board "has graciously agreed to return from retirement," according to the board of trustees.

The York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) board is finalizing the recruitment process for a new director of education and expects to issue the posting "in a timely manner," according to a news release.

The announcement that Mary Battista will immediately "reprise her role" comes on the heels of the latest education director's abrupt departure from the position after a month in the role. The appointment of Robert Hofstatter, who took on the job March 1, was announced last February.

Previous to his appointment, Hofstatter was the program head of computer science and engineering robotics at St. Michael’s College School in Toronto, and vice-president of global information security operation systems at Scotiabank.

Battista was interim director for six months prior to her retirement last February, after holding leadership positions at the board, including superintendent of curriculum and assessment, and superintendent of education, school leadership.

"We are most grateful to have a seasoned leader who knows and cares for our board and will be able to maintain stability and support during these challenging pandemic times,” said Dominic Mazzotta, chair of the board.
