The Regional Municipality of York 2018 Drinking Water Systems Report outlines top marks achieved in drinking water quality, serving up over 99 per cent for the combination of its high-quality drinking water test results and Ministry Inspection scores in the Chief Drinking Water Inspector’s Annual Report.
“Providing clean, safe, reliable drinking water for residents requires constant focus and continuous improvements, as achieving results of over 99 per cent have shown,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “When it comes to the water we drink and use each day to sustain us, achieving this high standard of care is the only acceptable measure.”
Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002, York Region reports annually on the quality and quantity of drinking water produced. It is one component of a robust and rigorous “multi-barrier” approach to protecting public health through drinking water, which also includes source water protection, operator training, water treatment, extensive monitoring and testing, as well as emergency preparedness.
“We continue to be diligent in every aspect when sourcing and delivering drinking water,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Chair of Environmental Services. “Results from the 2018 report continue to show the Region’s commitment to keeping public drinking water safe and the excellent performance of our drinking water systems.”

Within York Region, water is delivered through a two-tier water system. The Region operates and maintains 15 drinking water supply systems, which provide water to the nine local cities and towns. The local municipal partners collectively maintain their drinking water distribution systems to distribute high quality water to residents and businesses.
