The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society has returned from northern Ontario with 32 cats in need of homes, bringing the total number of northern cats and dogs transferred this year to 94 animals.
The cats will find homes through Ontario SPCA animal centres in Sudbury, Orillia, Orangeville and York Region, as well as the Humane Society of Durham Region, which formally joined the Ontario SPCA last year. Toronto Cat Rescue has also welcomed some of the feline passengers.
The cats were transported by the Ontario SPCA from the Second Chance Pet Network in Dryden, located approximately 1,300 kilometres north of Sudbury. The Ontario SPCA works with the Northern rescue each year to help it find homes for the cats in its care.
A lack of access to basic animal wellness services, such as veterinarians and spay/neuter services, has contributed to an increase in animal populations across northern Canada. The Ontario SPCA and its partners work alongside communities to deliver much needed resources, such as food and mobile wellness services, and to support the management strategies of Northern communities through spay/neuter and re-homing initiatives.
“These are beautiful cats who just want a family to love them, but there are sadly more adoptable animals in many parts of northern Canada than there are families to adopt,” says Arista Wogenstahl,regional manager, Northern Outreach Services, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society.
“By working together to move these cats to areas of the province where there are families waiting to adopt, it allows our animal partners in the North to assist more animals who need sheltering and care.”
