York Catholic District School Board director of education Domenic Scuglia has announced his retirement.

York Catholic District School Board is losing its director of education as Domenic Scuglia is retiring after a 41-year career.

Scuglia has served in the position since July 2021, stepping into the role as a longtime educator and principal within the school board. After a career teaching and as principal in the board, he spent five years as director of education in the Regina Catholic School Division before returning for YCDSB's top spot.

“It has been a joy and honour to be part of the YCDSB for 40 years,” Scuglia said in a Feb. 7 news release. “It was a difficult decision to start a new phase in my life, but I know that we have the right people in place to ensure that the YCDSB remains the top school board in Ontario for years to come.”

In his place, John De Faveri is taking over as interim director of education. De Faveria has served as superintendent of education at YCDSB and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that the trustees at YCDSB have given to me to once again serve the York Catholic community,” said John De Faveri. “It feels great to return to where my career began.”

Scuglia began his career as a physical education teacher, before serving as a vice-prinicpal at Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham and Holy Cross Catholic Academy in Woodbridge. He was layer appointed principle at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple and founding principal of St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic High School in Aurora.

Board chair Elizabeth Crowe complimented Scuglia's efforts with the board.

“The board of trustees is grateful for Domenic Scuglia’s many contributions to the YCDSB, in particular for creating stability in our school board during the difficult days near the end of the pandemic,” Crowe said. “Dom’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples is inspiring and it will be one of his lasting legacies in this board.”

Scuglia has also helped the spread of rugby in the province, previously serving as the president of Rugby Ontario.
