Visit the fire station, have fun learning about fire safety

Central York Fire Services is celebrating Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7 to 13 with an open house tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fire Station 4-1, 984 Gorham St. You can enjoy fire safety games, watch vehicle rescue demonstrations, take a ride on the Tim Hortons Express Train, tour fire trucks, do arts and crafts and meet everyone’s favourite mascot, Sparky the fire dog. A barbecue gets underway later in the afternoon. Donations will be accepted for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of York Region. For information about Fire Prevention Week, visit here.

Find unique and vintage pieces from local artisans

Join Etsy this Saturday, Sept. 29 for its fifth annual one-day cross-country marketplace from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Newmarket Community Centre. Shop the market for unique, handmade and vintage finds from local artisans or the must-have Christmas purchase. The marketplace is happening in more than 35 communities across Canada. Take in the open house for Culture Days at Elman W. Campbell Museum

Celebrate Newmarket’s culture at the Elman W. Campbell Museum Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A new exhibit called Warmth Through the Generations will showcase rare quilts from the museum’s collection, as well as quilts loaned by the community. Quilts from Elman W. Campbell’s mother and grandmother, as well as Dresden Plate and Colonial Lady are among the display. There will be a history hunt around the museum and an opportunity to learn about the many artifacts.

Enjoy The Lorax, thanks to National Forest Week

Watch the Dr. Seuss inspired movie The Lorax, while learning about National Forest Week, at the Old Town Hall Sunday, Sept. 30 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Regional Municipality of York Region and Town of Newmarket, the movie is about a 12-year-old boy searching for the one thing that will win him the affection of the girl of his dreams.
