Delivering Hope Spring Fashion Affair With a French Flair: The fashion show in support of Abuse Hurts is at Newmarket Old Town Hall from 6:30 to 10 p.m., with local models, catered cuisine, silent auction and retail marketplace. Tickets, $ 70.56, here.

Aurora Cultural Centre Concert: Aurora Cultural Centre presents Charles Richard-Hamelin (piano) at Trinity Anglican Church, Aurora at 7 p.m., with a pre-concert talk with Rick Phillips. Tickets, $35, at 905-713-1818.

Saturday, May 11

Annual Community Plant Swap: Newmarket Library holds its third plant swap, a great way to exchange plants with others and chat about growing and gardening, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Prepare by dividing your perennials such as hostas, irises and others, and place some in pots to share. Or take clippings from your houseplants and root them in pots. Or if you have too many of a particular houseplant, bring some in to swap. Join us and enjoy sharing your passion for plants with others. For more information, call 905-953-5110, ext. 4770.

Newmarket Farmers' Market: It's the 25th season of the Newmarket Farmer's Market at Riverwalk Commons, on Doug Duncan Drive, where you can connect with local farmers, enjoy delicious treats, discover unique artisans, take in some live music, and enter a draw for a market basket, while visiting with family and friends. The market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until October.

York Chamber Ensemble Concert: York Chamber Ensemble presents Rossini Bruch Haydn at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 227 Church St., Newmarket. Tickets, $35 adults and $20 students, at ticketscene.ca.

Live At The Met: Live at the Met presents Madama Butterfly (Puccini) at SilverCity Newmarket and Cineplex Odeon Aurora Cinemas at 12:55 p.m.

Outdoor Meditation All Seasons: Join the meditation group every Saturday outdoors in the beautiful setting of Fairy Lake Park at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., rain or shine, snow or sun, or blizzard (unless extreme.) Some mats, cushions, and chairs will be available. Dress appropriately for the weather, and feel free to bring a mat, cushion or folding chair if you like, but not necessary.

Keynotes Seniors Choir Mother’s Day Concert: The choirs presents its annual tribute to mothers with guest Harrison Vandikas at the Newmarket Seniors' Meeting Place on Davis Drive at  2 p.m. Freewill offering.

Newmarket Cycles Group Ride: Explore Newmarket by bike at Newmarket Cycles’ free family-friendly group ride from 3 to 4 p.m., starting and ending 470 Davis Dr. Rides are typically about 10 km long and explore trails, quiet residential streets, and local cycling infrastructure. No registration required.

Coming up:

Touch a Truck, Thursday, May 23: This free, fun, hands-on event hosted by the Town of Newmarket, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Robert N. Shelton Operations Centre, 1275 Maple Hill Court, allows you to touch, explore and get up close with a variety of vehicles used by the municipality, including a fire truck, Zamboni, backhoe, dump truck and more. The event is in celebration of the National Public Works Week. Arrive prior to 7:30 p.m. to ensure entry. This event can get loud at times, so safety ear plugs are encouraged.  Parking can be a challenge as this is a very popular event, so leave lots of time to find a spot and be careful of your friends and neighbours on the road making their way to the event. 

Community Living Central York Spring Craft Market, Saturday, May 25: Community Living Central York, 575 Penrose St., Newmarket holds a craft market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Newmarket Folk Society presents Catherine MacLellan, Saturday, May 25:  Newmarket Folk Society hosts Catherine MacLellan, one of Canadian folk music’s true gems, at an all ages/licensed show on at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:15 p.m.) at the Newmarket Legion, 707 Srigley St.  Tickets are $30 with three ways to pay: at Ticketscene.ca (purchase online by credit card); Etransfer to [email protected] (please include the name "Catherine MacLellan" and your email address in the comment box - no password/security answer is required); call Patty McLaughlin at 705-431-7182 to pay by credit card.

Town of Newmarket presents Spoons, Friday, May 31:  Enjoy a night of new wave and pop music from this Juno-nominated band featuring all their hits and fan favourites, along with some new songs and stories from the road at Newmarket’s NewRoads Performing Arts Centre at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $49.15. Derrick Ross, Rob Preuss, Gord Deppe and Sandy Horne would help define the sound of pop and New Wave in the ‘80s, with hits including Nova Heart, Romantic Traffic, Old Emotions and Tell No Lies. Their album Arias & Symphonies was named one of the 20 Most Influential Albums of The '80’s by the Chart Magazine

Tapestry Chamber Choir Concert, Saturday, June 1: The Tapestry Chamber Choir welcomes its new director, Robert Hennig, at its Canada: Coast to Coast to Coast concert at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 222 Church St., Newmarket. Joining the performance is the 40-member chamber choir from Huron Heights Secondary School and director Arlene Charters. BRAVE for Girls, Saturday, June 8: Northridge Church hosts BRAVE, a free one-day event created to remind girls that they are valuable and worth being celebrated. Aimed at girls aged 12 to 16, BRAVE is a day filled with music, art therapy classes, lunch, candy, a self-defence class, and swag bag from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Register here.
