Weekend events include free Elton John tribute concert Thursday with Epic Elton, free family movie Friday at the library, the Lucky Lion Night Market returns all weekend, two car shows, Tapestry of Taste, and Shindig music fest

Thursday, Aug. 10

Summer Family Concerts with RUSS: Every Thursday, you can join children's entertainer RUSS for a free concert at the Newmarket Public Library’s multipurpose room Aug. 10 to 24, from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Storywalk Outdoor Reading Adventure: Enjoy an enchanting outing with Newmarket Public Library’s Storywalk, an outdoor reading activity that will delight families and readers of all ages. Enjoy sunshine and fresh air as you stroll through parks while reading Kate and the Dragon at Paul Semple Park to Aug. 11, and Environmental Park Aug. 14 to Sept. 1. Library staff will be at the parks at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting, for special storytimes at: Paul Semple Park Aug. 10; Environmental Park Aug. 17, 24, 31.

TD Music Series, Thursdays to Aug. 24: Every Thursday evening enjoy a free tribute band concert from 6 to 9 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons, 200 Doug Duncan Dr. Each concert features local performers and a premier tribute band. Aug. 10 features Epic Eltona tribute to Elton John, with The Free Label opening. Food and beverage Mulberry's Oven and Old Flame Brewing Company. Bring a lawn chair and arrive early to secure a spot, and bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at the Quench Buggy. Also returning is the Mercedes-Benz Newmarket Backstage Lounge.

East Gwillimbury Farmers Market: Every Thursday, rain or shine, the farmers market features local vegetables, artisan vendors, meat, cheese, baked goods, honey, soaps until Sept. 28 at the Civic Centre at 19000 Leslie St. in Sharon from 2 to 7 p.m. Some vendors may only accept cash payments.

Friday, Aug. 11

Summer Family Movies: Drop in to enjoy a family-friendly movie in the multipurpose room at  Newmarket Public Library, 438 Park Ave. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and movie starts at 2 p.m. Snack provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Lucky Lion Night Market, Aug. 11-13: York Region’s newest and fastest growing Night Market returns to Upper Canada Mall's southwest parking lot. The night market features new and interactive features that celebrate Asian culture and cuisine, including 200 food items, a merchant area, premium claw machines, licensed bar area with its own curated cocktail menu, interactive LED Chinese lion dancing, K-pop dance competitions/games, workshops for all ages, balloon crafting, an Omikuji fortune booth, and tons of photo ops. Friday 3 p.m. to midnight.

Tapestry of Taste: Connect with your community through arts, culture, food and heritage at the annual Tapestry of Taste at East Gwillimbury Civic Centre, 19000 Leslie St., Sharon from 5 to 10 p.m. This two-day event features live entertainment, an artisan vendor market, delicious food, refreshing beverages, strolling entertainment, kid’s activities, and more. For the full entertainment schedule, visit www.eastgwillimbury.ca/TOT  

Saturday, Aug. 12

Newmarket Car Club's Classic & Custom Vehicles Show: The Newmarket Car Club hosts its 11th annual show at Fairy Lake Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Back to School Baby and Kids Clothing Swap: Bring in your gently used kids fall and winter clothing and footwear to Aurora Public Library at 15145 Yonge St., then drop by on Aug. 12 10 a.m to 1 p.m. to pick out some new clothes for your little ones. No obligation to bring clothes.

Newmarket Farmers' Market: Every Saturday morning from May through October from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Riverwalk Commons in historic downtown Newmarket is transformed into a vibrant market space where our community gathers to support local food. Connect with local farmers, enjoy a delicious treat, discover unique artisans or take in some live music while visiting with family and friends. The Schindig 2023: The Schindig is back for its 4th year, a "wee" music festival showcasing all the good that honest, authentic music, and people, can inspire at The Plain House, 4136 Vivian Road, Cedar Valley. Sunflower Fields of Markham: Experience the beauty of a 20-acre sunflower field, explore the trails, take stunning photos and immerse yourself in nature's tranquility from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 10378 Highway 48 (field entrance three driveways past). Open for a limited time only. Tickets $5 youth, $10 adult, $25 family pass.  

Sunday, Aug. 13

Right Track Racing's First Annual Car Show: Open to all vehicles — new/old, street/race, works in progress, motorcycles, etc. There will be kids activities, raffle prizes and food and ice cream trucks. $10 per vehicle to enter, free admission for spectators. All proceeds support the not-for-profit organization founded by police officers to help prevent stunt driving and street racing through education over enforcement.

2nd Annual Flower Festival, Marques Family Farm: Enjoy a stroll through the Marques Family Farm one-acre flower trail, while cutting the most beautiful flower bouquet. Enjoy your day surrounded by our beautiful landscape, sweet farm animals and the serenity that radiates from the fields. A large open grass area will be filled with local vendors, lawn games and crafts for children. Admission is $20 per vehicle (up to five people) and includes one feed bowl for the animals. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 365 King St, Newmarket. Farm also features a market filled with Ontario produce, baked goods, preserves and Kawartha Dairy ice cream. Remember to bring a jar and scissors if you would like to cut flowers, or purchase at the farm.

Highway 11 Cruisers present the 3rd Annual Summer Fest Car Show, Sunday, Aug. 20: Bring your classic cars, hot rods, restomods, rat rods, trucks, motorcycles or even your tractor, everyone is welcome, minimum $10 donation for charity, gates open at 11 a.m. at the Sharon Temple at 18974 Leslie St. Live music, vendors, prizes and fun for the whole family. Spectators welcome from 7 to 10 p.m., park on a nearby street as the on-property lots are for those displaying their cool rides. There is limited parking onsite for visitors with mobility permits.

Concert for the Independence Day of Ukraine, Sunday, Aug. 27: Support Ukraine at the fifth annual concert from 2 to 3 p.m. at Trinity United Church, 461 Park Ave., Newmarket featuring classical and popular works by Mozart, Strauss, Albinoni, Joplin. as well as Ukrainian famous works. Advance tickets, $27.96, are recommended.

Splash of Culture, Thursday, Aug. 31: Enjoy a free evening of musical performances by talented artists in a unique setting as the Mercedes-Benz Newmarket Skating and Water Feature transforms into a beautifully lit stage complete with a baby grand piano. From 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Newmarket Riverwalk Commons, 200 Doug Duncan Dr.
