Residents will get their chance to weigh in on a new 24-unit subdivision on Jacarandah Drive at Newmarket council March 28.

The town will hold a public hearing regarding 1038 and 1040 Jacarandah Dr., where a developer is planning 22 semi-detached units and two single-detached units.

Council will also consider a resolution to support funding for Lake Simcoe.

Here is what NewmarketToday will be following:

Housing proposal

Council will hear deputations about a proposed development at 1038 and 1040 Jacarandah Dr. at a public hearing.

The project from Spotlight Development would feature 24 homes using a property that previously contained two. David McKay of MHBC Planning will present on behalf of the development.

The development will have a private lane. It has been in the works for more than four years, with the developer scaling back a previous proposal for 30 units.

Council will listen to the presentations but will not make any decisions at the meeting.

Lake Simcoe support

Newmarket is due to pass a resolution from Councillor Christina Bisanz regarding funding for a Lake Simcoe restoration fund.

The resolution highlights ongoing threats to the watershed like phosphorous runoff and other contaminants. It notes the federal government funded a $65-million cleanup fund for the watershed over 10 years between 2007 to 2017 but did not renew after that.

“The lake is a significant source of drinking water for our community, as well as being integral for local reaction,” Bisanz said to the committee of the whole March 21.

She said the funding could be used for shoreline mitigation, restoration and upgrades to retrofit wastewater and stormwater facilities.

The resolution asks for the funding to be included in the 2022 budget as part of a $1-billion freshwater action plan promised by the Liberals in the 2021 election.

Return to chambers

Council is due to return to hybrid meeting style, allowing for electronic or in-person participation for both councillors and the public.

Newmarket went to electronic meetings over the winter as COVID-19 public health measures increased. But with most measures now lifted, the town said it would be using hybrid meetings again March 28.

The town will stream the meeting from the municipal offices at 1 p.m. You can view the stream through newmarket.ca/meetings. You can also email [email protected] to send correspondence, register a deputation, or make an appointment to attend the meeting in person at the municipal office at 395 Mulock Dr.
