If you love your mom a "brunch," you can cook her a delicious brunch and support a Newmarket charity assisting absused women and their childen.
York Region Chef Julian Pancer of the Chef Upstairs is hosting We Love You a Brunch, Mom, a free virtual cooking class on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 9 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
"While the cooking class if free, donations will be gratefully accepted for Abuse Hurts, a charity that provides support and healing for adult survivors, their families and caregivers," Pancer said. "We may be in lockdown, but we can’t let that stop us from celebrating our mothers on May 9th."
More than 8,000 women and children have turned to Abuse Hurts, formerly the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
“We’ve provided support to over 8,000 women and children coming out of abusive situations with 23,000 items,” said Ellen Campbell, founder and CEO of Abuse Hurts. “That number doesn’t include all the Christmas toys that were distributed."
Abuse Hurts has also helping five Indigenous shelters in Northern Ontario, Campbell said.
"We have furniture, housewares, clothing, almost everything that’s needed when coming out of a shelter. We are a one-stop shop and assist groups and shelters all over our province.”
The Chef Upstairs, which offers cooking classes for all ages, has became a popular virtual option for families, friends and corporations during the pandemic.
“Last February, we set the world record for the largest virtual cooking class,” said Pancer. “We’re so pleased to be teaming up with Abuse Hurts, an outstanding charity that is doing so much for our communities. It is our goal to gather families together on Mother’s Day to cook a wonderful brunch for their moms and to show them how much we love them and care.”
Entertainment and a special appearance by Huggum Bear is included.
