The law enforcement community is mourning the loss of another police officer killed in the line of duty: Const. Grzegorz Pierzchala of the OPP, who was shot Tuesday

The law enforcement community in Canada is mourning the loss of another police officer killed in the line of duty.

Const. Grzegorz Pierzchala of the Ontario Provincial Police — a 28-year-old remembered as having "the biggest heart of gold" — was shot Tuesday afternoon while responding to a vehicle in a ditch west of Hagersville. He later died in hospital.

Peter Leon, a retired OPP officer who now works as communications co-ordinator for the Barrie Police Service, was a recent guest on Inside the Village, a news podcast produced by Village Media.

He talked about the inherent dangers of policing, how officers cope with that daily stress — and why he hates the term "routine call."

“If you are called to be a member of the law enforcement community, you know there are risks," he said. "You know there is that possibility that the next time you put on the uniform might be the last.”
