Volunteers are needed for Neighbourhood Network's annual tree planting initiative across York Region, including Newmarket, on May 14.

The non-profit branch of Aurora-based Magna International has been hosting a springtime planting of tree and shrubs for several year in local communities, including Newmarket, Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, and King Township, and this year they are adding a planting event in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Over the years, more than 17,000 trees and shrubs have been planted through this initiative.

On May 14, from 10 a.m. to noon, tree plantings will take place in partnership with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. In Newmarket, the planting will be at Jim Barber Court, near Main Street and London Road, and along the Tom Taylor Trail.

Registration is required for the event, there are no walk-ins, and you can sign up online. You are encouraged to register early as spaces are limited.

The event is rain or shine and planters are told to dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. You are also asked to bring your own gardening gloves.

Along with the planting event in Newmarket, there will be other plantings at the same time at the following locations:

  • Vines Place Stormwater Pond in Aurora
  • Rogers Reservoir Meadow in East Gwillimbury
  • Walmart Stormwater Pond in Georgina
  • Tyrwhitt Conservation Area in King
  • Vandorf Park in Whitchurch-Stouffville
