VIDEO: Coronation Day means a ride in some King bling

After the ceremony, King Charles will depart for Buckingham Palace in the most lavish ride imaginable: the Gold State Coach; Canadian Forces members will be among the escorts

Can't relate to the Royal Family? This won't help.

After his coronation on Saturday, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will depart for Buckingham Palace in the most lavish ride imaginable: the Gold State Coach, a horse-drawn carriage that dates back to 1760 and is worth more than $5-million in modern-day cash.

"This is the most baroque, ornate thing," said Royal watcher Patricia Treble, during a recent appearance on Village Media's Inside the Village podcast. "You've never seen so much gold in your life — so many cherubs. There are cherubs everywhere."

To add to the pomp and circumstance, Canadian Forces members will be among the escorts marching beside the gilded carriage.

A veteran journalist (you can check out to her Substack here), Treble will be among the commoners in Britain lining the streets for Saturday's coronation. You can watch her full podcast interview here.

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across our chain of Ontario newsrooms.
