UPDATED: Scarborough man, 72, on bicycle killed in Hwy. 404 collision near Mulock

Southbound Hwy. 404 re-opened in Newmarket following tragic accident

A 72-year-old Scarborough man is dead after being struck by a vehicle this afternoon on Hwy. 404 south of the Mulock Drive ramp in Newmarket.

The southbound lanes have been re-opened, after being closed at Davis Drive for several hours for the Aurora OPP detachment investigation following the 1:45 p.m. accident, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.

The cyclist entered the southbound lanes of the highway after coming across the merge lanes at Vivian Sideroad/Mulock Drive into the middle lane, where vehicles swerved to avoid him. A white Ram 1500 pickup truck in the far left lane, however, was unable to avoid the collision, according to Schmidt in a video online.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Obviously a very tragic situation," Schmidt said.

The northbound lanes had remained open, however traffic was moving slowly due to "visual distraction delays" and a minor collision, Schmidt said.
