Newmarket Mayor John Taylor shares his thoughts on Newmarket's contribution to the battle against COVID-19 in York Region in this month's column. As always, he welcomes your questions and comments via [email protected]

COVID-19 vaccinations are in full swing and I think it is a reason to be very optimistic. The Town of Newmarket has not only supported COVID-19 testing at our seniors centre, but we have supported one of the largest vaccination centres in the province at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex.

We have now almost completed vaccinating all people over the age of 80 in York Region, while many health units are yet to begin. We did this by York Region Public Health stepping out and creating its own booking system in advance of the provincial system being ready.

It didn’t go perfectly but 20,000 people were able to book appointments in the first two hours of registration. As supply arrives we will book more and more people.

I urge everyone to get the vaccine because being vaccinated is a community effort. I have said I want to support local business and the best way I can do that right now is by getting vaccinated. When my turn comes, I will not hesitate!

I am very excited about the spring weather and seeing people on the trails and in the parks. Stay safe everyone and thanks for being part of an incredible community response to COVID-19.
