A restaurant in Markham was closed last week following a food inspection, then permitted to re-open only to be charged by York Region Public Health. A retirement residence in Richmond Hill was also charged.

Tofu Yang at 8333 Kennedy Rd. in Unionville was inspected on Oct. 12 and was found to be not in compliance of a number of items, including being "maintained in manner permitting adverse effect on food" and "maintained in manner adversely affecting sanitary operation."

Food inspectors provided onsite education, scheduled a re-inspection, and issued a closure order.

Tofu Yang was re-inspected on Oct. 14 and was found to be not in compliance with having a certified food handler or supervisor on site during all hours of operation. The restaurant was reopened, but charged for not maintaining the "food handling room in sanitary condition."

This was one of two establishments charged between Oct. 10 and 16.

On Oct. 12, Delmanor Elgin Mills at 80 Elgin Mills Rd. E was charged with not having clean floors in the food handling area.

During that inspection, the home was also found to be not in compliance of a number of items, including not maintaining equipment and non-food contact surfaces, not maintaining records of pest control measures, and not maintaining general house keeping.

York Region Public Health conducted on site education, posted a public health sign, and issued a ticket.

Charges are provincial notices with set fines, issued under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
