An accidental kitchen fire caused by cooking with oil led to a fire at a multi-unit residential home in Newmarket Saturday evening.

Central York Fire Services responded to reports of a fire Dec. 16 a home on Andrew Street, according to an incident report.

Upon arrival, the fire crew reported light smoke coming from the home and upon entry, encountered a working fire on the second floor in the kitchen area.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire that caused significant smoke and fire damage to the home.

While all tenants were safely evacuated prior to Central York Fire Services arrival, they have been displaced from their home.

Andrew Street was closed from William Street to Ellen Street until the fire was extinguished.

Overall, Central York Fire Services deployed five fire trucks, one platoon chief, and one senior officer to the scene for a total of 22 personnel.

Central York Fire Services wants to remind residents of the danger of unattended cooking. It’s the leading cause of fires in Ontario.

“Always stay in the kitchen while cooking and turn off the stove if you must leave,” Central York Fire Services said in the report. “If there is a fire in your kitchen, put a lid on it and turn off the heat source. Never pour water onto a grease fire.”

Central York Fire Services said that when a fire occurs, the top priority is to get outside and if possible, when you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Then, meet at a designated safe spot outside the home. Call 911 once you are safely outside.
