The Town of Newmarket celebrated positive stories from the past three years with the release of a new community report.

The municipality’s report covers events and news stories from 2019 to 2022, spotlighting different happenings throughout town. Highlights include Mulock Park, the clock tower hotel, concerts and more.

“It is amazing to see how much we have been able to accomplish, working together with our community and many partners. Our success is always driven by our strong commitment to collaboration,” Mayor John Taylor said in a news release. “This report is particularly special because it captures an unprecedented time in our history.

The report attempts to spotlight everything there is to love about town. This is the first community report since 2017, with reports previously being an annual endeavour.

“If you are seeking your perfect place to live, the Town of Newmarket will be love at first swipe,” the report opens in a nod to a popular online dating app on which users indicate they find someone attractive by swiping to the right across a photograph.

“For those of you who live in Newmarket, we’ve likely been in a long-term relationship for a while, but for some of you, this might be our first date. We want to put our best foot forward by telling you a little bit about this special place.”

The start of the report highlights council's last term, with a rundown of what it’s done for its strategic priorities. It then goes on to feature various initiatives and partnerships by the town, such as dismantling anti-Black racism, a permanent Indigenous land acknowledgment at the town office, York Pride and the opening of a new skate park earlier this week.

Pandemic-related efforts were also featured, with the #StandApartTogether campaign, a drive-by parade for health-care workers and the Choose Local effort to support local businesses.

“After all that, we hope it’s obvious why Newmarket is your perfect match,” the report said in closing. “When you scratch below the surface, you will see that Newmarket is really all about heart.”

“I hope that our community is as proud as we are of the progress that we have made over these past few years while supporting our community and local businesses through a global pandemic,” Taylor said. “Our sense of community and the extraordinary people that live here are what set us apart.”
