Submissions are open for a bursary for Canadian students who have faced homelessness.

The Scholars with Lived Experience of Youth Homelessness Bursary (LiveEx) is awarded by Making the Shift to full or part-time students enrolled in any post-secondary institution in Canada.

Five awards of $3,000 each will cover the cost of tuition, costs of living, research-related costs, school-related travel, conference fees, or books for the fall 2022 semester.

It also includes membership to the Making the Shift Scholars with Lived Experience Network, a national community where scholars who have experienced youth homelessness can grow their network, develop leadership capacity and mentor each other.

Candidates must show proof of enrolment in a post-secondary institution and identify as having lived or living experience with youth homelessness.

In 2021, the bursary's inaugural year, there were 37 applicants. A committee of network members with lived experience will review applications. The deadline to submit an application is June 8, 2022.

Individuals from marginalized communities and groups, including First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, Indigenous peoples of Canada, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, individuals who identify as women and/or gender diverse, 2SLGBTQ+ persons, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Young people who experience or have experienced homelessness can face barriers to accessing and maintaining participation in post-secondary studies and the bursary and network aim to support students so they can successfully complete their post-secondary degrees.

Applicants must also provide a void cheque/direct deposit form, social insurance number, mailing address and phone number. Anyone needing assistance with the application requirements or to inquire about how the bursary will impact student loans or social assistance can contact Making the Shift LiveEx coordinator Elaine J. Laberge with the subject line LivEx Bursary Application.

Making the Shift is a social innovation lab that funds, conducts, prototypes, and mobilizes cutting-edge research to prevent and end youth homelessness in Canada.
