As we head into a new year, we're thanking you for the warm welcome of NewmarketToday since our Sept. 4 launch by highlighting some of the stories that we particularly loved telling you.

In a world where the refrain "whatever" is heard far too often, you can't help but feel a little awed by this group of young people, aged 10 to 17, who are compassionate and caring beyond their years.

They're the members of the local 100 Youth Who Care group, which celebrated its second anniversary Nov. 21 with a $2,000 donation to Starlight Children’s Foundation — the largest single gift to date — and, of course, since they are kids after all, with a big cake and teddy bears, too.

In total, 100 Youth Who Care - Central York Region, with some help from sponsors, gave more than $5,700 last year to charitable organizations in our community whose services impact children and youth.

Laurie Brakeboer, founder of partner organization 100 Women Who Care - Central York, voiced the feelings of many adults when she told the group, “You inspire me, you make me realize the potential of the future — just think of what you can do as adults.

Each member gives $40 over the year and attends a one-hour meeting four times a year, adding up to $4,000 in donations to four local charities that they choose.

The group also provides its members with an opportunity to enhance leadership and communication skills, and connect with like-minded families and youth in the community.

If you're up for the challenge and want to do your part to change our world for the better — if you care — the group is welcoming new members from Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury, as well as new sponsors.

To join, submit an online registration or download the form.
