Stonehaven students add STEM challenge to food drive

Inspired by the concept behind Canstruction, students designed and built structures with cans that will be donated to Newmarket Food Pantry

Students at Stonehaven Elementary School added a STEM challenge to their annual food drive for the Newmarket Food Panty.

Based on the concept behind Canstruction, a global competion that challenges professionals, students and citizens to design and build creative structures with cans of food that are later donated to feed the hungry, the students took part in a "build day" Thursday, Dec. 12

The students created everything from the Eiffel Tower and a gingerbread house to a locomotive and reindeer doughnut with the cans of food they had collected during their food drive.

Next week, the students will take the structures apart, pack and deliver the food to the Newmarket Food Pantry, with some help from school council volunteers.
