A Newmarket woman was assessed in hospital after York Regional Police responded to calls about an armed and barricaded incident on Saturday, Aug. 28.
In the early afternoon, police were called to an address on Handley Crescent in the Quaker Hill neighbourhood, for a female barricaded inside a residence, Const. Laura Nicolle said.
The woman refused to come out when officers arrived on scene and at one point she was holding a knife, police said.
After attending the scene for several hours, “just after 9 p.m. our officers were able to successfully apprehend the female and she was taken to hospital for assessment,” Nicolle said.
No injuries occurred, and the incident is deemed to be a person in crisis case.
At this time, Const. Nicolle said charges have not been laid.
“The priority is obviously making sure somebody’s assessed medically and the crisis period is dealt with, so I don’t see that she was charged with anything right now,” she said. “If she is assessed and she’s deemed to be in some way responsible for her actions then they may, depending on what has happened. So if there was an offence that was committed beyond just this, we’ll take a look at it from there.”
Given the medical nature of the call, the age of the woman is not being revealed to protect her identity and privacy.
