Newmarket's Southlake Regional Health Centre will receive more than $2 million from regional taxpayers this year, as its part of York Region's multi-year commitment to provide $341 million to the region's four hospitals by 2031.

The annual contribution of about $15 million for capital projects is indexed to the previous year’s assessment growth and adjusted for hospital performance.

2019 funding amounts for the four hospitals are:
  • $6.7 million for Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital (opening in 2020)
  • $4.1 million for Markham Stouffville Hospital
  • $2.1 million for Southlake Regional Health Centre
  • $1.9 million for Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital

While the province funds up to 90 per cent of capital costs — mostly the “bricks and mortar” cost of construction — the remaining 10 per cent is mandated to come from the community as the "local share". All other costs, such as equipment, are also funded from community sources through the hospitals' charitable foundations.

York Region’s multi-year commitment to hospital capital projects will provide residents with improved access to health care and support the strategic plan priority of supporting community health, safety and well-being, according to York Region.
