The Honourable Merrilee Fullerton, minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, and Stephen Lecce, MPP for King-Vaughan joined Seneca officials, students and staff Sept. 28 for the grand opening of Magna Hall at Seneca’s King Campus.
The new 200,000-square-foot facility includes 25 new classrooms, computer labs, specialty labs, a library, and student centre with a multi-purpose athletic and recreation space. The campus can now accommodate 1,450 additional students, creating a total capacity of 5,000 full-time students, while enhancing the quality of student learning and campus life. The project allows Seneca to expand its range of health, community service and public safety programs.
The project was delivered through Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Financing and Procurement model, an innovative way of financing and procuring larger, complex public infrastructure projects.
“Our government for the people is working hard to ensure people are getting the skills and experience they need. I congratulate Seneca College on the opening of Magna Hall, providing students with the education, training, and support needed to prepare for the workforce of tomorrow, to bring well-paying jobs back to Ontario,” Merrilee Fullerton, minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, said.
“The opening of the Magna Hall at Seneca College’s King Campus will help enable young people across our community to gain the necessary skills for the jobs of tomorrow and strengthen our knowledge economy for generations to come,” Stephen Lecce, MPP for King-Vaughan, said.
The province invested a total of $59 million in funding for the project, which includes the $70.9 million contract with EllisDon. Seneca students also invested in the future of the campus through the Seneca Student Federation ($7.3 million) and the Student Athletic Association ($11 million).
The new facility is named in recognition of Magna International, which has provided a $3-million gift to the Campaign for King Campus.
“We are delighted to celebrate the grand opening of our new facilities. We are grateful to the province, our students, Magna International and many other donors who helped us bring this beautiful light-filled space to life. Magna Hall will benefit our future leaders and community builders in health sciences, public safety, community services, early childhood education and more," Seneca president David Agnew.
Construction of Seneca’s King Campus expansion began in August 2016, and the project was completed in May 2018. At the peak of construction, there were more than 300 workers on site daily.
