Two residents have been taken to hospital as a precaution following a fire in Richmond Hill condominium Friday evening.

The blaze at the 12-storey building at 30 Harding Blvd. West has been extinguished by Richmond Hill Fire Department firefighters, according to York Regional Police.

Residents of the condominium, which has 173 units, remain evacuated and are being provided temporary shelter in Viva transit buses at the scene.

"No word yet how long affected residents will be evacuated," police said on social media.

York Regional Police is requesting drivers to avoid the area, which is near Major Mackenzie Drive and Yonge Street, which remains blocked by first responders.
