The Newmarket Juried Art Show takes place this month after receiving a record-breaking number of submissions from artists across the province.
The show, which runs April 18 to 29 at the Old Town Hall, features 286 pieces of art submitted by 110 artists from 43 different towns in Ontario, organizers said. Many of them are from the Greater Toronto Area but also as far as Athens, Ontario.
The opening gala is on April 20 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The awards will be announced at the gala with more than $1,000 in prizes.
It is free to attend for all and there will be refreshments.
The art show is directed by Dave Kempton and Peggy Stevens, who said they "believe that the arts are integral to strong, resilient communities, and that such resilience is increasingly important in the face of a changing climate and other global challenges."
They have worked since 2018 to showcase Newmarket as an arts hub – both to the province and to itself.
"Newmarket has a thriving collection of artists."
The Newmarket Juried Art Show has typically been held in the fall but the co-directors said they have always wanted to hold it in the spring, and the artists are excited about the change, which was reflected in submissions, they said.
"Every day from the beginning of this year’s application process, we were ahead of past years. Finally being able to be a spring show seems to have worked," the co-directors said.
Both the show and opening gala are free to attend and the community is invited to come connect with the art.
