As the province's new public health restrictions take force today, the Town of Newmarket is closing all outdoor amenities, including playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment, basketball courts, pickleball and tennis courts, sport fields, baseball diamonds and the Newmarket dog park.

The temporary closures will be enforced as of 12:01 a.m. Saturday, April 17. The state of emergency and stay-at-home order in Ontario have been extended until at least May 20.

Newmarket’s trails and green spaces remain open, however, residents are reminded to follow safe physical distancing rules, and to wear a mask if physical distancing becomes a challenge. If the trail is busy, consider going to another trail or returning at a later time.

“With the cases of COVID-19 continuing to rise and our health-care workers and ICU doctors sounding the alarm bell, it's important that we take these restrictions very seriously and continue to follow public health guidelines,” said Mayor John Taylor in a news release.

“I know this pandemic continues to be extremely difficult for us all, but now is not the time to ease up. Please do your part by staying home as much as possible, being vigilant with physical distancing, wearing masks and handwashing.”
