Chabad Newmarket is hosting a Chanukah village on Main Street as part of its annual celebrations this year.

On Sunday, Dec. 18, the first night of Chanukah, four shops will be opening their doors as part of the village with different activities for people to participate in. This is from 3 to 4 p.m. Then at 4 p.m., the annual Menorah lighting will take place at Riverwalk Commons. The lighting ceremony is an annual event but the village aspect is new this year.

"We wanted to up the events and try to take advantage of the Main Street, which is very unique, and we were very glad that the shops are willing to step up and get involved," said Rabbi Mendy Grossbaum.

One of the stops, for example, is Hempen Jewellers, here kids will be able to make a Chanukah theme necklace. Guests will start at Riverwalk Commons and pick up a map that outlines all the activities available and where to find them.

After that, everyone will make their way back to the commons for the lighting of the grand Menorah. This is more of a ceremony, with local politicians attending, music, and of course the lighting.

Both events are open to anyone who is interested as Grossbaum said "the message is definitely a universal message. It's about spreading lights and kindness."

He said Chanukah is all about the light overcoming the night, something that is very relevant today.

This event is also something that brings together the community, especially at this holiday time, he said.

Both events are free to attend, but those who are interested in attending the Chanukah village or Menorah lighting are asked to RSVP online.
