Newmarket trio become Burger King's first customers after long wait

'We've travelled to Bradford, Toronto, Ajax. We've been everywhere for Burger King. Now we have one in our hometown, it's amazing,' says Ken MacDonald after ordering his favourite mozzarella sticks

The Burger King in Newmarket is officially open after what has been a long wait for many residents

Newmarket's Amber, Ken and Austin MacDonald were the first official customers to be served at the restaurant after waiting in their car ahead of the opening at 10:30 a.m. April 11.

"We've been coming every day since we knew they built this store. We've just been showing up waiting for it to be open," Ken said. "We got wind today that it was opening so we were very, very happy."

His go-to order is the mozzarella sticks, which is what he ordered this morning.

The trio said they think they will be coming back to the restaurant regularly and are excited that they don't have to travel far for their Burger King fix anymore.

"We've travelled to Bradford, Toronto, Ajax. We've been everywhere for Burger King. Now we have one in our hometown, it's amazing," he said.

Before it welcomed customers, Redberry, which is the franchisee of this location at Harry Walker Parkway and Davis Drive, had a ribbon cutting celebration with the mayor and members of council in attendance.

"A lot of excitement was created here. This is just remarkable," Mayor John Taylor said. "I've been to a lot of store openings and I've heard more about this than I've heard about anything in Newmarket."

He said he has been receiving emails, even three or four years ago from residents asking him to get a Burger King in this town.

Now that has officially happened.

The restaurant is at 47 Harry Walker and will be open everyday from 10:30 a.m. to midnight.
