Two restaurants in York Region were charged for public health violations by York Region inspectors last week.

The Fresh Tea Shop in Newmarket at 262 Main St. was charged Aug. 2 for food premises being maintained in a manner that adversely affects sanitary operation, according to the report for inspections made July 31 to Aug. 6 by York Region Community and Health Services, health protection division.

Inspectors found several items not in compliance with health standards, including: failure to provide hand-washing stations with adequate supplies; failure to provide hot and cold water under pressure; failure to maintain equipment in good repair; failure to provide adequate protection against the breeding of pests; failure to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair; failure to ensure presence of certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.

Items corrected during the inspection included failure to store/handle ice in a sanitary manner and failure to sanitize utensils in chlorine solution of 100 ppm of available chlorine or more.

As a result, food handler education was carried out on site and temporary measures were put in place. A re-inspection will be conducted at a future date, according to the report.

Days Inn Stouffville in Whitchurch-Stouffville, located at 38 Ringwood Dr., was charged Aug. 3 during a re-inspection for maintaining potentially hazardous foods at internal temperature between 4°C and 60°C.

The re-inspection stemmed from an inspection July 17 where the inn was flagged for failure to maintain records of pest control measures and failure to ensure presence of certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.

Food handler education was carried out on site after the re-inspection found the inn failed to store potentially hazardous food at a cool enough temperature, according to the report.

The inspection reports represent the condition of the restaurants at the date and time of the inspection only and does not guarantee or warrant the condition of the food premises at any other time, the public health unit states.
