Newmarket-based International Safety is one of the nominees for this year's Ontario Made Awards, hosted by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters.

The safety supply business is nominated for the retailer spotlight award, which is given to a retailer that highlights the importance of making things in Ontario.

International Safety, located at 355 Harry Walker Pkwy N., was established in Newmarket in 1993. It is a privately owned company to specializes in distributing health and safety supplies.

The company's mission, according to its website, is to find cutting-edge safety solutions to protect the health and safety of its people, which it said "are the unsung heroes of the Canadian Workforce. The men and women who get up every day and go to work in hazardous conditions. They contribute to our economy and our society. They're the ones that build our cities, keep us safe overseas and at home."

Its products include eye and hearing protection, high visibility clothing, first aid supplies, traffic safety, respiratory and breathing protection, boots, gloves, flashlights and area lights and other more specialized categories like alcohol and drug screening devices, ambulance and firetruck organization, and welding equipment, among others.

This is the second annual Ontario Made Awards, which celebrates local businesses and raises awareness of products made in Ontario.

"As a result, they increase local market sales, meet customers’ needs, and help grow the economy which feeds money back into services all of us rely on, such as schools, roads, and health care," said Dennis Darby, president and CEO of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters. "We couldn’t be prouder than to recognize the accomplishments of this year’s nominees and celebrate the incredible variety of Ontario-made products that are made and sold by these companies."

This is also the second year that a Newmarket business has been nominated, after Red Thread Brewing Company was nominated in the retailer spotlight category last year.

The Ontario Made Awards are voted on by the consumer and you can vote online until Jan. 8. The winners will be announced in a virtual award ceremony on Feb. 22.
