TORONTO – The LOTTO MAX odds have shone in favour for Douglas Heard of Newmarket! He won a MAXMILLIONS prize worth $500,000 in the May 20, 2022 LOTTO MAX draw.
Douglas, a 59-year-old father, said he is an occasional lottery player who purchases tickets on Fridays when he can remember. “I injured my finger playing golf and went to the pharmacy to purchase some medical tape,” he recalled while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up his winnings. “They didn’t have the tape, but I picked up a LOTTO MAX ticket instead.”
Douglas said when he checked his ticket, he originally thought he won $500. “I was pleasantly surprised with that amount. When the lottery terminal froze, I thought it was a lot of rigmarole for $500. It wasn’t until I saw the slip that I realized it was for half a million!”
Douglas, an engineer, said he went home to share the news with his wife. “I highlighted the fact that I’m a good husband,” he laughed. “We both hugged and cried – it was very surreal! The first few nights I kept waking up wondering if this was a dream.”
He plans to pay down his mortgage, share with his children and set some of his win aside for retirement. “My wife has a bathroom renovation in mind and I’d like to plan a bucket list golfing trip,” he concluded.

LOTTO MAX players in Ontario have won over $7 billion since 2009, including 91 jackpot wins and 767 MAXMILLIONS prizes, right across the province. LOTTO MAX is $5 per play and draws take place on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The winning ticket was purchased at Shoppers Drug Mart on Yonge Street in Newmarket.
