The Town of Newmarket is inviting you to drop off unwanted electronics for an Earth Week recycling event on April 23.

The municipality is accepting electronics that day at its operation centre at 1275 Maple Hill Ct. The town said the items would be properly recycled and disposed of by a contractor.

“Earth Week allows us to raise awareness on the steps we can all take to help minimize environmental impacts in the community,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said. “Properly disposing of your unwanted electronics will help keep these items out of landfills.”

The town will be accepting a range of electronics including computers, printers, displays, headphones, telephones, cameras, video game devices, cables and peripherals, musical instruments, used batteries and more.

The town said it would not accept motor vehicles, toys, textiles, power tools, small and large appliances, and information and telecommunications equipment weighing more than 551 lbs.

Earth Week runs April 16 to 24.

More recycling events are also coming up. The town said there would be a repair cafe April 30 at the Newmarket Public Library by NewMakeIt and York Region. The region has also helped fund an ongoing electronic reuse initiative happening at NewMakeIt on Sundays through May.

The municipality advised several other environmental actions to keep in mind for Earth Week, including replacing light bulbs with energy-efficient ones, buying used, reducing single-use items, battery recycling and using other transportation besides vehicles.

“I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to do some spring cleaning and drop off your old or unused electronics at this event,” Taylor said.

The town recycling event runs April 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can find more information at newmarket.ca/ecoevents. You can also book a timeslot for the library repair cafe through its website.
