Newmarket gets $4.4 million funding boost from province

Infrastructure funding part of provincial pool for small, rural, and northern communities

The province is providing Newmarket with more than $4.4 million in funding for infrastructure.

The funding can be used towards infrastructure projects throughout the town. Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy made the announcement alongside Mayor John Taylor at the council chambers Dec. 13.

The funding from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund is for critical projects like road, bridge, water and wastewater projects.

“This funding will support the economic growth and job creation, ensuring that the town of Newmarket can continue to maintain and upgrade our local roads, watermains and stormwater management ponds to better serve our local residents as our community continues to develop and grow,” Gallagher Murphy said in a news release.

The fund supports local infrastructure funds, providing stable funding to rural and northern communities, plus communities with populations under 100,000. The funding allocations are based on a formula. Municipalities can accumulate funding for up to five years to address larger projects.

Taylor said the town has previously used money from this fund for Lorne Avenue reconstruction and replacing watermains, among other projects.

“I am extremely pleased with the province of Ontario’s announcement,” he said. “These projects wouldn’t have been possible without support from other levels of government and will allow us to continue to provide safe and reliable services to our residents, businesses, and our growing community.”

Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma said small, rural and northern communities “like Newmarket” are essential to the province’s growth.

“Our government is continuing to provide stable funding to meet local infrastructure needs and provide support in response to pressures from inflation,” Surma said. “By supporting key community infrastructure projects, we are helping to grow and build safer, more resilient communities for generations to come.”
