In the wake of the Hamas attacks in Israel, flags across Newmarket have been lowered to demonstrate support for Israelis.

The Town of Newmarket announced Tuesday that flags at all municipal buildings, including Central York Fire Services stations, will be at half-mast.

As well, the lights at Fred A. Lundy Bridge will be lit blue and white in the colours of the Israeli flag "as Newmarket stands in solidarity with the people of Israel," the town stated.

Hamas militants stormed through a border fence Saturday and massacred hundreds of Israelis in their homes, on the streets and at an outdoor music festival.

Militants in Gaza are holding an estimated 150 people taken hostage from Israel — soldiers, men, women, children and older adults — and they have fired thousands of rockets into Israel over the past five days.

As Israel amounts air and ground counter offensives in Gaza, the war has already claimed at least 2,300 lives on both sides, according to Associated Press.
