NEWS RELEASE

The Town of Newmarket in partnership with the Newmarket Farmers’ Market is very pleased to announce that the Farmers’ Market will return to its home in downtown Newmarket for the 2021 season, beginning Saturday, May 1. The Farmers’ Market is permitted to open under provincial guidelines during stay-at-home orders as it is deemed to function under the same rules as grocery stores. Public Health has approved the Farmers’ Market to open with strict safety measures and capacity limits in place and vendors only being permitted to offer items deemed essential.

“It’s widely recognized that outdoor activities are lower risk and the Farmers’ Market will essentially operate as an outdoor grocery store, delivering essential, locally grown food. Our Farmers’ Market has been engrained in the fabric of our community since its inception more than 20 years ago and we are very excited that we have been able to work together to see the Market safely return to Riverwalk Commons for the 2021 season,” says Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. “The Market experience will look different this year with various regulations in place to protect the health and safety of vendors and patrons, which remains our number one priority.”

The Town of Newmarket and the Farmers’ Market have worked with York Region Public Health to implement various health and safety protocols, including a limited number of vendors. This year, the Farmers’ Market will be fenced and capacity limits will be in place to ensure a safe and physically distanced shopping experience. Vendors and patrons will all be required to wear masks while within the fenced market area. Last year, the Farmer’s Market temporarily moved to the Magna Centre parking lot (800 Mulock Drive) as a result of COVID-19.

“We would like to thank the Town for their partnership in helping to bring the Farmers’ Market back to our home in Riverwalk Commons,” says Dave Cooper, President of the Newmarket Farmers’ Market. “We are working hard to ensure a safe shopping experience with various COVID-19 protocols in place. We greatly appreciate the continued community support and we look forward to another successful season.”
