Newmarket residents can get a boost to their spring cleaning at the town hosts an electronic recycling event to celebrate Earth Week.

The town announced it will set up a drive-thru at its operations centre April 22, allowing residents to drop off unwanted electronics. Those will be properly recycled and disposed of by a municipal contractor, Quantum Lifecycle Partners LP.

“Properly disposing of your unwanted electronics will keep these items out of landfills, help to reuse and recycle valuable raw materials and most importantly, save energy, reduce pollution and minimize greenhouse gases,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said in a news release.

Accepted items will include computers, printers, phones, video gaming devices, radios, headphones and more. The event will exclude small and large appliances like microwaves, vacuums, fans, power tools and textiles.

The event will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1275 Maple Hill Crt.

As Earth Week approaches, the town said you can take other environmental actions, including replacing light bulbs for energy-efficient ones, buying used instead of new and using reusable containers.

“Earth Week allows us to raise awareness on the steps we can all take to help minimize environmental impacts in the community,” Taylor said. “ I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to do some spring cleaning and drop off your old or unused electronics at this event.”
