Some Newmarket residents may experience low water pressure and discoloration as the town conducts its annual watermain cleaning program starting this week.

The town will be uni-directional flushing water from one fire hydrant to another, which it said was a best practice for preserving high-quality water and maintaining reliability in the system. The work has begun July 17 and will take place three to five times a week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. throughout town, starting in the central east and central west areas.

The town said this will not impact most residents, but temporary lower pressure and discoloration are possible.

“Please note that discoloured water does not pose a health hazard,” the town said in a news release. “If this occurs, residents can run their faucets for a short time until the water is clear.”

Workers will be flushing out hydrants, involving closing valves in a specific sequence to create water movement in one direction. The town said the technique will allow for better scouring of pipes and dislodging and removing mineral deposits, biofilm and sediment that accumulates in watermains.
