Neurologist Dr. Sharon Cohen, the medical director of the Toronto Memory Program, is the guest speaker of the virtual Forget-Me-Not Breakfast Saturday, April 24.

Cohen will discuss the latest in dementia research and answer audience questions after her 60-minute presentation. Cohen, who is committed to improving treatments in dementia through participation of clinical trials, said she is optimistic about the future of dementia research, predicting by the end of this year or next there will be a drug that slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

“More drugs will follow,” said Cohen, who is “not pinning her hopes on just one drug,” but rather a cocktail that will help slow the progression of this fatal disease.

Currently, more than 17,000 York Region residents live with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia, with that number to expected to more than double by 2031. With every person diagnosed, another 10 to 12 people are directly impacted.

The Alzheimer Society of York Region (AS York) provides programs and services to York Region residents impacted by dementia through adult DAY programs, healthcare navigation, social worker support, support groups and public education.

The Forget-Me-Not Breakfast takes place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Zoom. Tickets are $10, with proceeds supporting programs to ease the dementia journey. Tickets can be purchased here
