Metrolinx is planning to make safety enhancements at Newmarket’s train crossings throughout April.

The transit agency is installing tactile plates and painting line markings on sidewalks along the crossings to support safety enhancements as part of the ongoing Barrie GO Expansion Project. These changes will be made at Mulock Drive, Water Street, Timothy Street and Davis Drive.

“These improvements will make the crossings even safer for vehicles, pedestrians and the community,” the Town of Newmarket said in a news release.

During the work, a small portion of the sidewalk will be closed off. The town said signage will be in the place to redirect pedestrians. Residents could also experience increased noise from construction equipment.

“The Town of Newmarket will continue to work closely with Metrolinx to ensure minimal disruption,” the municipality said.

Metrolinx said the work will occur in phases to ensure that pedestrian access is maintained on one side of the crossing.

The work is part of Metrolinx's efforts to make improvements throughout the Barrie GO line, which will eventually result in more frequent two-way, all-day service.

In Newmarket, the work schedule for the sidewalk improvements is as follows:

  • Mulock Drive, April 2, 9 and 24
  • Water Street: April 1, 10 and 24
  • Timothy Street: April 1, 10 and 24
  • Davis Drive: April 3, 11 and 17
