'Match made in heaven': Big Rad Burger joins Newmarket craft beer bar

New restaurant partnership opens near corner of Main Street and Davis Drive

The burgers by Newmarker chef Alexander Pacca reflect all the places in the world where he has cooked.

With 22 years of experience, he said he has worked in kitchens all over the world, from Portugal to England to Brazil.

But now he is building a local name with a new burger place in Newmarket.

“I love to make food because I want to make people happy,” he said.

Pacca opened Big Rad Burger at 13 Main St. South by Davis Drive earlier this month. Operating in the same location as The Sticks Craft Beer Bar, the new restaurant offers a variety of burgers with an international flavour.

The chef said he learned his craft on the job. He decided to travel the world to cook to discover more of the world, he said.

But after meeting his wife while working in England, he moved to Brazil so they could be together. They eventually decided to move to Canada through connections with friends to raise their family.

“Life in Brazil is very dangerous,” he said. “We know Canada is good to live with kids and family.”

After finding a home in Aurora, Pacca saw an opportunity in The Sticks, which was seeking a partner to provide food. He walked into the building and found it warm and inviting, he added.

The Sticks opened a few months ago and owner Samantha Rickford said they wanted to find a partner to expand the food offerings at their locale. Pacca and his burger spot, a distinct entity in the building, fit the bill.

"We wanted the burgers to stand out," she said. “We didn’t want just anyone to come in here and do whatever."

The two businesses offer the perfect combination of burgers and craft beers. They have plans to open up a patio in the summer months ahead.

With more customers expected, Rickford said she is preparing to leave her position as a developmental support worker to manage her business full time.

“I just kind of have to jump in feet first,” she said. “Everything’s coming together.”

The business has been faring well in its first few weeks, Pacca said, and he looks forward to the season ahead.

“Match made in heaven,” he said. “We want people to come and enjoy.”
