Markham restaurant, Vaughan school charged with health infractions

Two establishments in York Region were charged for public health violations by York Region inspectors last week.

Les Chateaux Restaurant in Markham, 7 - 8360 Kennedy Rd., was charged on Jan. 16 for failure to ensure equipment surfaces are cleaned as necessary, failure to protect food from contamination or adulteration, and failure to ensure food handler in food premise washes hands as necessary to prevent contamination of food, according to the report for inspections made Jan. 15 to 21 by York Region Community and Health Services, health protection division.  

During the compliance inspection, it was noted that the food establishment also failed to ensure ceilings are kept clean/in good repair, failed to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair, and failed to ensure the presence of a certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.

Inspectors noted several other infractions that were corrected during the inspection, including failure to store and maintain potentially hazardous food at an internal temperature 4°C (40°F) and lower; failure to provide a thermometer in hot-holding equipment; failure to use hand washing station for reasons other than its intended use; and failure to use utensils/equipment free from open seams/crevices/cracks in contact with food.

Food handler education was carried out on site and a re-inspection will be conducted at a later date.

Central Montessori School, 72 Steeles Ave. W., in Vaughan was charged with failure to ensure food handler in food premise washes hands as necessary to prevent contamination of food areas on Jan. 19

During an initial compliance inspection on Jan. 16, it was noted that the school failed to store and maintain potentially hazardous food at an internal temperature 4°C (40°F) and lower; failed to take reasonable precautions to ensure that food is not contaminated by hair; failed to protect food from contamination or adulteration; and failed to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair.

Food handler education was carried out and a re-inspection was conducted on Jan. 19. The school was issued the charge during the re-inspection.
