Konstantinos Christou of Markham won $50,000 in the Jan. 9 Merry Millions draw.

Markham resident Konstantinos Christou may treat his wife to "something sparkly" after winning a Merry Millions prize worth $50,000.

“I bought a ticket when the clerk suggested this new game,” he said at the OLG Prize Centre to pick up his winnings from the Jan. 9, 2024 draw. “When I checked my ticket at the store and saw all the zeros, I felt like my eyes popped out of my head.”

Konstantinos, a husband, father and grandfather, shared the news with his wife over coffee.

“I brought her some Instant tickets to play, and she noticed the slip from the store. Her birthday was coming up in a few days, so when she asked if I won $50,000, I said, ‘Happy birthday.’ She was shocked.”

“It was such a blessing mixed with disbelief. Ever since we found out, we have been happy making our plans on how to enjoy this win.”

Konstantinos took his family out to celebrate with a steak dinner.

“I might treat my wife to something sparkly for her birthday. I hope to plan a fun adventure with her so we can experience some things that are on our bucket list,” he concluded.

He said he’s been a regular lottery player for many years, and this is his first big win.

The winning ticket was purchased at Petro Canada on Ninth Line in Markham.
