Winter may be chilly, but that doesn’t mean you can’t heat up the season with some Arctic adventures. In York Region, there are many ways to make the most of this beautiful season and remind us why we #loveyr. Whether you prefer diving into snow piles or sipping a warm beverage, we’ve rounded up some winter fun for everyone.
The great skate: It seems everywhere you look in York Region, you can find an outdoor skating rink glistening in the winter sun. Try gliding through the picturesque Richmond Green Skate Trail or joining in on a game of shinny at Mill Pond in the City of Richmond Hill. To the north, you can make your way to Riverwalk Commons in the Town of Newmarket for a skate under the stars.
Slide down the slopes: Strap on your ski or snowboard boots and get ready to head for the hills! The Town of Georgina is home to the ROC, which boasts tubing, skiing, skating, snowboarding and tobogganing. Not a fan of the great white outdoors? You can watch the fun from the warmth and comfort of the ROC’s beautiful chalet while enjoying great food and drinks.
Walking in a winter wonderland: If you prefer a quiet walk to whistling down a ski hill, try one of the tree-lined trails at Toogood Pond or Rouge National Urban Park in the City of Markham. To take in the beauty of one of our York Regional Forests, try snowshoeing your way through Hollidge Tract in the Town of Whitchuch-Stouffville or Zephyr Tract in the Town of East Gwillimbury. Breathe in the fresh icy air and see if you can spot a snowy owl hiding in an evergreen!
Marvelous maple syrup: Indulge your sweet tooth in the classic Canadian way at one of the many maple syrup events at the Kortright Centre for Conservation in the City of Vaughan. Take a stroll through the sugar bush or enjoy a tasting by twilight.
It’s toboggan time: Grab your best sled or crazy carpet and satisfy your need for speed at the toboggan hill at Lambert Wilson Park in the Town of Aurora. It’s a free activity and fun for all ages!
Hoot and Howl: Over at the Cold Creek Conservation Area in the Township of King, you can learn all about owls and coyotes at their Hoot and Howl event on Feb. 20. Dress warmly – you’ll be venturing into these predators’ natural habitat!
