Loaded gun stolen from police vehicle in East Gwillimbury

VIDEO: Police believe two suspects stole items from multiple vehicles, including an unmarked police vehicle, early Sunday

A loaded police firearm was stolen from a parked vehicle in East Gwillimbury on Sunday, York Regional Police said.

The unmarked police vehicle was parked in a residential driveway on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 17 at the southeast section of Mount Albert Road and Holland River Boulevard when two male suspects stole police-issued equipment, including a loaded .40 calibre Glock Model 23 handgun and a Panasonic Lumix digital camera model FZ1000, police said.

The suspects unlawfully entered several vehicles in the area between 2 and 3 a.m., including the unmarked police vehicle.

An investigation ensued immediately upon the report of the theft, police said, and the suspects were recorded on video surveillance and were seen walking around and checking to see if any vehicle doors were unlocked in the neighbourhood.

One suspect is described as wearing a two-tone, yellow-and-grey jacket or sweatshirt with a yellow hoodie, yellow shoulders and a grey horizontal stripe across the chest, as well as blue jeans and a red-brimmed ball cap, police said.

Police described the other suspects as appearing to be wearing a jacket or sweater with a dark-coloured right side, a light-coloured left side and a light-coloured hoodie. He also had a two-tone backpack.

Police said they have followed numerous leads since the theft was reported, but are now appealing to the public for assistance identifying the suspects. Police are urging anyone who had items stolen from their vehicles in the area to report it if they haven’t already done so.

Images of the suspects and a video clip have been released by police to help identify the suspects.
