Liberal leader takes aim at Ford's handling of pandemic during Newmarket visit

Steven Del Duca expresses concerns about capacity for testing and contact tracing, school reopenings while in town to meet with local small businesses

Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca took aim at Premier Doug Ford and his government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic while in Newmarket this morning for a small business roundtable.

"I am gravely concerned about Doug Ford's capability in terms of dealing with a second wave of the pandemic," Del Duca said to NewmarketToday prior to the roundtable on local and provincial issues impacting small businesses held at TreeFrog on Davis Drive on Oct. 15.

"I have not at all been happy with the fact we do not have the capacity for testing or contact tracing in place, and that the reopening of schools — his plan — was not a good plan for the people of Ontario. And we're going to keep driving home that message," he added.

Today's visit to Newmarket is part of a tour across the province in the last seven months to learn more about the impact of the pandemic on Ontarians, especially small businesses, he said.

"I know the last six or seven months have been very difficult for the people of Ontario, including people living in Newmarket and across York Region. We are a resilient people in this province, I know that if we work hard and we stay focused on supporting one another, we can remain very strong," Del Duca said.

The former Vaughan MPP and transportation minister in the previous government under Kathleen Wynne was elected as leader of the Ontario Liberals last March, just prior to the pandemic lockdown.
