Ana Golja and Adamo Ruggiero, who both portrayed 2SLGBTQ+ characters on the iconic Degrassi television franchise, were interviewed by Carlos Bustamante and discussed what Pride means to them and the evolution of their characters throughout the years on June 24 on Global’s ET Canada, .

Ana and Adamo spoke about challenges that youth in the 2SLGBTQ+ community face on a daily basis – specifically the need for safe spaces. Blue Door's INNclusion initiative provides the first safe, temporary housing for 2SLGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness in York Region.

Heartbreakingly, 2SLGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately represented among people experiencing homelessness, with 20 to 40 per cent of youth experiencing homelessness in North America identifying as 2SLGBTQ+.

Forced into homelessness to escape the identity-based abuse experienced at home, youth search for safety. But prior to INNclusion, there were no safe housing options for 2SLGBTQ+ youth in York Region and even the streets and emergency housing programs are often filled with discrimination.

The impact of a lack of safe spaces is startling, affecting employment, family and relationships, housing, and mental health. Sadly, one in three 2SLGBTQ+ youth attempted suicide in the last year.

“We see this population suffering every day. To provide hope and support, Blue Door launched INNclusion earlier this year, which now offers safe space for 2SLGBTQ+ youth to heal from trauma, escape homelessness, and thrive in their community,” says Michael Braithwaite, CEO of Blue Door. Blue Door has over 39 years of experience providing emergency housing services and supports to men, families, and youth at risk of or experiencing homelessness in York Region.

INNclusion provides safe, stable housing for up to one year for four 2SLGBTQ+ youth, who are experiencing homelessness in York Region. Wrapped in supports, a Peer Mentor will work with the youth to help them achieve their goals surrounding education, health, housing, and employment.

More than just a bed and four walls, INNclusion provides a pathway out of homelessness filled with love and support.
