If you get an email saying 'Newmarket Power Alert,' it's a scam

Newmarket-Tay Power warns customers about a scam targeting them, the second this month

Newmarket-Tay Power is warning customers about an email scam offering fake rebates to Newmarket residents.

"[Customers] are receiving emails from a Florida company with the heading 'Newmarket Power Alert' advising of a rebate program. NT Power does not email customers offering rebates. This email is a scam. If you receive this email please delete," the power company said in a tweet on Aug. 26.

NT Power was forwarded one of the scam emails from a customer, communications coordinator Blaine Osmond said. The bottom of the email showed a company name and address in Florida saying the email was sent from there.

He said NT Power has only received one report of this email scam. However, with past scams, Osmond has said anytime there is just one report, the company will issue a warning as it knows that majority of customers don't report scams.

This is the second scam targeting NT Power customers this month. Earlier in August, the power company warned residents that a phone scam was occurring involving threats to disconnect power for customers unless payment was received immediately.

Power scams are not uncommon, and in April of this year the Ontario Energy Board saw a 70 per cent increase in energy-related scams.

If you receive an email about power rebates, you are advised to delete the email immediately.
