Horseshoe Resort gets jump on ski season with today's opening

Oro-Medonte resort is first in Simcoe County to open to skiers and snowboarders

Horseshoe Resort is getting a jump on the ski season.

The Oro-Medonte resort will be the first in Simcoe County to open to skiers Friday.

“The resort’s early opening can be attributed to its substantial investment in state-of-the-art snow-making technology, adding over 100 new snow-making guns to the resort’s existing infrastructure over the past two years. The result? Optimal snow conditions earlier in the season for all to enjoy,” states a news release from the resort.

On opening weekend, the resort will be open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lift tickets and rentals will be available for purchase on site only.

Limited runs and lifts will be available, and lift tickets will be at a discounted price.

Mount St. Louis Moonstone won't be far behind. The Oro-Medonte ski hill will open for the season on Saturday morning.

According to social media, the resort's 59th season will begin with a 25- to 40-centimetre base of snow on its 11 slopes. For more information, visit their website.

Hardwood Ski and Bike opened their cross-country trails this week as well. According to the Nordic facility's website, the trails may not be open tomorrow due to the mild weather.

Blue Mountain Resort in the Collingwood area says it plans to open on Dec. 7.

There is no word yet on when Snow Valley will be opening for the winter season.
