Newmarket has launched a new open dara website.

Newmarket residents have a new way to explore the town as the municipality launched an overhaul to its open data system called Navigate Newmarket today.

The new website offers residents the ability to locate maps, open data and the geographic information system (GIS) in one place. The website includes links to historical records, traffic calming measures and various maps such as of the urban tree canopy and veteran memorial streets.

“We are excited to launch our new and improved Navigate Newmarket online hub,” Mayor John Taylor said in a news release. “This online hub is another great example of how Newmarket continues to be innovative in its approach to services for the community while showcasing how GIS and data can be used to help make informed decisions.”

The update comes on world GIS Day, meant to celebrate the systems, help others learn about them and for professionals to share their accomplishments.

The new website includes an array of features and an “improved user interface” that includes fast-loading speeds, the town said. Also included is Newmarket’s census profile, a directory of local businesses and printable maps. Data is available for download in several different formats.

The website also features a “locate my plow” feature, allowing a live look at the municipal snow plow crews and how much of the town’s roads have been plowed.

“Sharing data freely and openly allows for greater transparency and accountability, can improve services, and improve efficiency and effectiveness of government services,” the town said.
