You can make your walk, hike and bike ride count for a good cause by joining the virtual Hike for Hospice May 21 to 31 in support of Margaret Bahen Hospice and Doane House Hospice in Newmarket.

Getting active for a minimum of 30 minutes and raising money from friends and family will help support end-of-life care in Newmarket.

The goal for this year's event is to raise a total of $70,000.

“Our Hike for Hospice is our biggest annual event that raises much needed funds for our two hospices. We are fortunate to receive government funding for our clinical care team and medical supplies, however, we need to raise $850,000 from the community to pay for all of the other expenses that make our hospice like a home. Hike for Hospice is a key component to our fundraising success each year and we look forward to seeing our community get active while supporting hospice,” said Jennifer Adams, director of development, Margaret Bahen Hospice and Doane House Hospice.

You can register as an individual or start a team at www.myhospice.ca/hikeforhospice/ and set a fundraising goal for yourself. Share your personal page with your friends and family and tag your photos on social media with #Hike4Hospice.

Doane House Hospice has been supporting individuals with life-limiting illnesses in this community for more 32 years, and for the past four years, Margaret Bahen Hospice has become a home away from home for residents in need of residential end-of-life care.

In 2020, the two hospices supported 1,007 clients in the community and 171 residents and their families in the residential hospice.

"We rely on the amazing support from people like you and the funds raised will allow us to continue providing the essential programs and services to York Region community members during one of life’s most challenging time," Adams said.

The Hike for Hospice 2021 sponsors are Bazil Developments Inc., Marshall Funeral Home & Elgin Mills Cemetery and TD.
